How to reuse your old candle jar

Creative Ways to Reuse Your Empty Candle Jar

There's something satisfying about burning a candle all the way to the end. But once the last flicker is gone, your MillTown jar doesn't have to head to the recycling bin just yet.

While we don't offer refills, our clear glass jars were made to last and can easily become part of your home in a whole new way. From the kitchen to the craft room, here are some of our favorite ways to give your candle jar a second life.

First Things First: How to Clean Your Candle Jar

Before reusing your jar, you'll want to remove any leftover wax.

Method 1: Freeze It (Our Favorite)

Place your candle in the freezer overnight. The remaining wax will shrink as it freezes, making it easy to pop out with a butter knife or spoon.

Method 2: Warm Water

Pour warm (not boiling) water into the jar. As the wax softens, it will float to the top. Once cooled, simply remove the wax and wash the jar with warm, soapy water.

A quick tip: Avoid pouring melted wax down the drain, as it can harden in your plumbing.

Once your jar is clean and dry, it's ready for its next purpose.

1. Grow Fresh Kitchen Herbs

Fresh basil, rosemary, thyme, parsley, or mint look right at home in one of our clear jars. Place a few cuttings in water on a sunny windowsill or use the jar as a small herb planter for your kitchen.

2. Propagate Your Favorite Houseplants

One of our favorite uses.

Pothos, philodendron, monstera, and many other houseplants root beautifully in water. The clear glass lets you watch the roots develop while adding a little greenery to your home.

3. Organize Your Coffee Bar

Create a simple, organized coffee station by filling your jar with:

  • Coffee pods
  • Sugar packets
  • Stir sticks
  • Marshmallows for hot cocoa
  • Biscotti or wrapped treats

It's functional and looks beautiful sitting on the counter.

4. Store Baking Essentials

Our jars are the perfect size for keeping frequently used baking ingredients close by.

Fill them with:

  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon sugar
  • Chocolate chips
  • Sprinkles
  • Mini marshmallows

They look especially charming on open shelving.

5. Bathroom Organization

Keep everyday essentials neatly organized by filling your jar with:

  • Cotton balls
  • Cotton swabs
  • Bath salts
  • Hair ties
  • Makeup sponges

Simple storage can still be beautiful.

6. Organize Your Craft Room

Whether you sew, quilt, paint, or scrapbook, these jars are perfect for keeping small supplies together.

Store:

  • Thread spools
  • Sewing clips
  • Buttons
  • Embroidery floss
  • Paint brushes
  • Binder clips

7. Display Seasonal Decor

One jar can change with every season.

Fill it with:

  • Candy corn in the fall
  • Peppermints at Christmas
  • Jelly beans in the spring
  • Mini pinecones
  • Acorns
  • Shells collected from summer vacations

It's a simple way to decorate throughout the year.

8. Create a Small Flower Vase

Fresh flowers, dried lavender, eucalyptus, or a few stems from your garden instantly transform your empty jar into a charming centerpiece.

Sometimes the simplest arrangements are the prettiest.

A Second Life for Something You Loved

One of our favorite things about handmade products is that they don't have to be disposable.

Long after your candle has filled your home with fragrance, the jar can continue serving a purpose—holding herbs in your kitchen, propagating your favorite plant, organizing your sewing room, or simply adding a little beauty to your everyday spaces.

We love seeing the creative ways our customers reuse their jars. If you've found a unique use for yours, share it with us on social media and tag @MillTownBathAndCandle. You might just inspire someone else's next project.
